Sediment filters are like big nets that trap sand, dirt, and other large particles in the water. They come in different sizes and ratings, based on how fine you need the filtration to be. For example, a 5 &#8211; micron filter will catch particles that are at least 5 microns in size. It can&#8217;t remove all the impurities, especially some very small molecules and ions. That&#8217;s why we usually use RO in combination with other technologies.<\/p>\n<h3>Electrodeionization (EDI)<\/h3>\n<p>EDI is another awesome technology we use in UPW systems. It&#8217;s a way to further purify the water by removing ions.<\/p>\n<p>In EDI, we have a stack of ion &#8211; exchange membranes and ion &#8211; exchange resins. When an electric current is applied to the stack, the ions in the water are attracted to the electrodes of the opposite charge. The ion &#8211; exchange resins help to capture and transfer these ions through the membranes. This process continuously regenerates the ion &#8211; exchange resins, which means we don&#8217;t need to use as much chemicals as in traditional ion &#8211; exchange processes.<\/p>\n<p>EDI is really great because it can produce high &#8211; purity water continuously and with very little maintenance. It&#8217;s also more environmentally friendly than some other methods because it reduces the use of chemicals for resin regeneration.<\/p>\n<h3>Ultraviolet (UV) Irradiation<\/h3>\n<p>UV irradiation is used to disinfect the water and remove organic compounds. UV light has a certain wavelength that can damage the DNA of microorganisms, like bacteria and viruses, making them unable to reproduce. This effectively kills them and makes the water safer.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to disinfection, UV can also break down some organic compounds in the water. Some organic molecules absorb UV light, which causes them to break apart into smaller, more easily removable pieces. This helps to further purify the water and reduce the total organic carbon (TOC) levels.<\/p>\n<h3>Ultrafiltration (UF)<\/h3>\n<p>Ultrafiltration is another filtration step that we often include in our UPW systems. UF membranes have larger pores than RO membranes but smaller than sediment filters. It can be used as a pre &#8211; filter for RO to protect the RO membranes from fouling, or it can be used after RO and EDI as a final polishing step to remove any remaining particles.<\/p>\n<h3>Monitoring and Control Technologies<\/h3>\n<p>We can&#8217;t just set up a UPW system and forget about it. We need to constantly monitor the quality of the water and make sure the system is working properly. That&#8217;s where monitoring and control technologies come in.<\/p>\n<p>We use sensors to measure a whole bunch of things, like conductivity, pH, temperature, and TOC levels. Conductivity is a good indicator of the amount of dissolved ions in the water. The lower the conductivity, the purer the water. pH sensors tell us how acidic or basic the water is, which can be important for some processes.
